  • Some medical qualifications for General Practitioners are interchangeable and mutually recognised so provided you meet the requirements, registering with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) is quite simple.

Doctors from overseas are known as International Medical Graduates (IMGs) All IMG Doctors need to have their medical qualifications and experience time assessed and recognised in order to work in Australia.

Some overseas GP’s can work seamlessly in Australia after completing a period of supervision and must work in a District Priority Area (DPA).

The Australian Fellowship of the RACGP is called FRACGP and stands for Fellowship of the Australian College of General Practitioners. In order to work as a General Practitioner in Australia your skills and qualifications must be assessed by the RACGP.

Another fellowship in Australia is FACRRM through the ACCRM (Australian College Rural and Remote Medicine (ACCRM)

  • The TSS (Temporary Skill Shortage visa) is the most popular visa for medical practitioners relocating to Australia. The TSS requires you to be sponsored by an employer and requires the AHPRA interim letter to complete this pathway. Doctoru will assist with the visa application process.

  • Whilst they say that nothing can compare to home, the carefree Australian lifestyle is truly unique. Australia is a diverse country filled with many wonderful cultures and communities. It won’t be hard to make friends here and there are endless opportunities for GP´s professionally and personally.

During winter, Australia sees an average of 10 hours of sunshine a day. Warm months, longer days and plenty of sunshine means, an outdoor lifestyle like no other. Our beautiful coastline has promoted a thriving beach culture, with Aussies always finding a reason to kick off their flip flops and put their toes in the sand. If the beach isn’t your cup of tea, you can always explore our cosmopolitan cities, the red sands of Uluru or one of our flora and fauna-rich rainforests.

Offering a high quality of life, pristine beaches, high pay, and much more; few other places beat Australia when looking for a new start a world away. Many have dreamt of moving to Australia and there are plenty of expats here already. Why not take the first step of making your dream come true today?

How much

do GP´s earn

in Australia?

Australian GP´s are the third highest earners in the world and earning potential is uncapped for those who want to go the extra mile.

How much you earn depends on where you work, billing practices and patient demographics.

Earnings are strong in rural and outer-metro areas as they often have a high level of chronic disease and | or a severe shortage of GPs.

Registration 19AB Exemptions

  • You will need a Medicare Provider Number for the specific location where you are working to get paid by Medicare. Doctors trained overseas can only get a Provider Number if they have a 19AB or 19AA exemption.

This is not related to your professional registration and is the only way to get paid for your work.

Overseas trained doctors are subject to a 10 year restriction on where they can work known as the ‘ten year moratorium’.

  • You are an overseas trained doctor (OTD) if you trained outside Australia or New Zealand for your primary medical degree.
You are also an OTD if you got your medical degree in Australia, but were not an Australian resident or citizen on the first day of medical school.

If you obtained your primary degree overseas, but completed a registrar training program in Australia, you will still be restricted to a 19AB exemption.

  • DPA areas have been designated as Distribution Priority Areas due to medical workforce shortages.

You can check the current status at any time by accessing the Health Workforce Locator Map. If you work in a DPA area, you will be able to use your provider number for the rest of your moratorium, regardless of whether the DPA status changes or not.

The DPA exemption is not time limited or restricted. You can work at any time of day or night until you finish your moratorium.
